Mercedes E-Class Coupe & Cabriolet

The "you've made it in life" vehicle

Some people look at the E-Class like it is expensive, but in fact, this is not the case. It is a car that reflects that you've made it in life and it's time to own a car of style. I grabbed the E-Class Coupe first, then the week after that, the E-Class Cabriolet. Returning home from T. Gargour & Fils, official distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Lebanon, my neighbors looked at me with a surprising look and said, "What an elegant Benz!" Both test cars were the E200.

Exterior
The E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet facelift embraces a new front and rear design that was freshly introduced for the sedan and wagon, as well as new engines and a host of the latest tech gear. Remarkably, the front guards and bonnet remains untouched, with designers giving the car a new face with a fresh bumper, headlights and grille. The Coupe and Convertible have stuck with the existing design that includes a design arc that runs above the rear wheel arch and meets the taillight. The rear light lenses were improved, but the rest of its tail is still the same.

Interior
Mercedes-Benz has additionally updated the interiors of the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet to great effect, carefully coordinating them with expressive exteriors. Inside the vehicles, stylish materials dominate alongside clearly structured surfaces and the two-part trim element that stretches across the entire dashboard. This can be selected in a choice of authentic materials, such as wood or aluminum, thereby rounding off the interior's high quality overall impression.
Also new are the instrument clusters with dials backed in white and the head unit's trapezoid-shaped full-color TFT display with its high gloss frame. The kinship with the new E-Class family is indicated by an analogue clock between the redesigned air outlets, as well as by controls in silver chrome.

The restyled center console without selector lever, as well as a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with DIRECT SELECT lever and shift paddles in conjunction with an automatic transmission also help to set the tone for the interior.

One special asset of the new E-Class Cabriolet is that, thanks to the acoustic soft top with its particularly high grade insulation, the vehicle achieves the lowest noise level in its class. The unique acoustic soft top ensures that, even at high speeds, only very little wind noise is heard in the interior.

The highly innovative AIRCAP system is available as an option for exceptional comfort when driving with the top down. This reduces wind turbulence within the vehicle interior and, therefore, wind noise, too. New: in Active mode, the AIRCAP system deploys automatically at speeds exceeding 40 km/h, and the wind deflector in the windscreen frame automatically retracts again below 15 km/h. This ensures that the E-Class Cabriolet appears in its purest form when driving slowly and when stationary. The two rear head restraints together with the draught-stop between them respond to the number of vehicle occupants by extending automatically if the rear seat belts are in use.

Also optionally available: AIRSCARF neck-level heating. This addition extends the Cabriolet season by ensuring it is comfortable to drive with the top down even when it is cold outside.

Drivetrain
A wide choice of powerful and efficient petrol engines for the Coupe and Cabriolet – all equipped with the ECO start/stop system – ensure outstanding performance combined with exemplary efficiency. New units include the BlueDIRECT four-cylinder petrol engines in the E 200 and E 250, featuring the same technology used in the latest six cylinder engine from Mercedes-Benz. Both of the four cylinder petrol engines meet the future EU6 standard, while in the Coupe they even comply with the strict criteria of efficiency class A.

Features
Both the Coupe and Cabriolet models of the E-Class are fitted as standard with COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist. It helps to significantly reduce the risk of a rear-end collision. Also forming part of the standard specification is a further improved ATTENTION ASSIST, which is now able to warn of inattentiveness and drowsiness across a wider speed range. In addition, all assistance systems of the E-Class family which are either new or now feature significantly extended functions are also optionally available, for example the new Driving Assistance package Plus.

Verdict
The classic Coupe and the four-seater Cabriolet of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class are amongst the desirable vehicles in their respective segments. Now Mercedes-Benz has completely revised both models. Although the segment is pretty crowded with many premium rivals, but it is always worth checking Mercedes' vehicles!

Rivals: BMW 4 Series, Audi A5, Cadillac ATS Coupe
Pros: value entry-level pricing, improved exterior styling, fuel economy
Cons: bit tight in the back, gear stick behind the steering
