In Jeddah, in the middle of the desert, I could imagine nothing but a 4x4 SUV. There's not much straight rivalry to the Land Rover 4. An as we all know, naturally, this vehicle can be used for extreme off-roading. People who own it spend most if not all of their time on asphalt, where ride comfort and handling are more significant than its huge off-road capabilities.

What's new for 2014?
Land Rover has upgraded the 2014 LR4. The multi-award winning vehicle gets a new look, new badging, new V6 petrol engine, new fuel stretching technology, new single-speed drivetrain, improved audio systems and a new range of driver assistance, comfort and safety features to broaden its appeal even further.

The popular LR4 continues to move from strength to strength and the addition of the new 3.0 S/C petrol engine to the 2014 range underpins our commitment to delivering power with sustainability. As one of the world's most stylish, capable and versatile SUVs, the LR4 is the perfect vehicle for people who enjoy living an active lifestyle to the fullest.

For 2014, the LR4 has been given a new face and numerous exterior detail changes. A new front grille, new front bumper, new headlamp design, new daytime running lights with a distinctive LED signature, plus two new alloy wheel designs further enhance the LR4's appearance. To give vehicle a heightened level of distinction, the optional ‘Black Design Pack' remains available for 2014 models, with revised detailing, plus 19 inch and 20 inch black alloy wheels.

Underlining Land Rover's commitment to power with sustainability, the 5 liter V8 petrol engine is replaced with the highly efficient 3.0 V6 S/C, and fuel-stretching intelligent stop-start technology is introduced on all petrol and diesel engines in a number of key markets. All models are equipped with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. The new V6 generates 340 hp and torque of 450 Nm to deliver acceleration from 0-100 kph in 7.7 seconds and a top speed 195 kph. That is done due to the new unit's enhanced efficiency and the fitting of intelligent stop-start; the 2014 Discovery with this engine produces just 269g/km of CO2.

The new range of driver assistance, comfort and safety features for the 2014 Discovery/LR4 include: wade sensing (a technology unique to Land Rover), blind spot monitoring, closing vehicle sensing, reverse traffic detection and T-junction cameras.

To align the 2014 LR4 with other premium Land Rover vehicles such as those in the Range Rover family, it will be available with Meridian premium audio. The standard system features 8 speakers and 380 watts of power, while the Meridian surround system produces an impressive 825 watts output and features 17 speakers.

Driving Impressions
I especially felt that the terrain response system enhanced its off-road capabilities. Hill start assist made it far easier for me to move away from standstill on a sharp slope, while gradient acceleration control provided me support even when hill descent control was disengaged.

The new V6 engine pushes the LR4 with enthusiasm, making it feel almost nimble. And good figures from 0-100 kph, around 7.7 seconds, which is kind of fast!

For off-road, there is no doubt about it, as it is Land Rover's legend of crossing the hardest obstacles from sand, rocks, water and even snow! I personally saw the LR4 accomplished its off-road mission in Lebanon on snowy terrain.

The Land Rover 4 is bright both on and off-road with a refined interior. It is comfy on long trips. It combines two capabilities into one SUV. You need to have the LR4 in your garage along with the other vehicles. Seriously consider it.

One word: gifted
