"Top down at high speed on the highway, the 2 Series feels refined versus the coupe sibling," said Khaled

"It drives like a small, lightweight BMW, but feels quick"

"The 228i feels great on the roads of Texas due to its well-balanced chassis"

"With the now-dead 1 Series, the 2 Series takes the legacy into the future"

We flew to Austin, Texas, in the USA, courtesy of BMW Middle East to drive the 2 Series convertible, and more specifically, on the "Circuit of the Americas". This car is a worthy successor to the first BMW 1 Series convertible.

The third car in the all new BMW 2 Series lineup, the convertible joins the coupe and Active Tourer models in showrooms across the Middle East.

Independent exterior design developed in parallel with the BMW 2 Series coupe, the sporting BMW convertible's features and clear visual differentiation from the compact models of the BMW 1 Series include: elegantly stretched lines, flat silhouette with pronounced swage lines, powerfully sculpted rear wheel arches pointing up rear wheel drive configuration, targeted personalization through model variants Advantage, Luxury Line, Sport Line and M Sport, each with specific exterior and interior design as well as equipment features.

Typical BMW proportions are its short overhangs, long bonnet, set-back passenger cell, broad wheelbase and wide track, significantly enhanced dimensions compared to its forerunner model, the BMW 1 Series convertible. Length has increased by 72 millimeters to 4,432 millimeters, width by 26 millimeters to 1,774 millimeters, wheelbase by 30 to 2,690 millimeters, front track by 41 to 1,521 millimeters and rear track by 43 to 1,556 millimeters. Extended interior specifications include e.g. optimized entry and exit comfort for rear passengers; luggage compartment volume increased by 30 liters to 335 liters with the top closed or by 20 liters to 280 liters with the top open; as well as a 35 millimeter-wider rear hatch compared to the predecessor model; rear seat backrest can be folded using a lever in the luggage compartment; through-loading aperture width increased by 150 millimeters to 450 millimeters and height of 246 (+28) millimeters.

The interior includes the signature BMW convertible "boat deck" look; harmoniously flowing shoulder line and soft-top compartment; rollover bar concealed behind rear head restraints when stationary; driver-focused cockpit; high quality materials and finish with model-specific accents; center console with high gloss black surfaces around radio and climate controls, and chrome surrounds for air vents and newly designed climate control display.

The BMW 2 Series convertible also offers innovative equipment features as well as increased space, comfort and functionality and a more premium character for the interior. It has a combination of contemporary aesthetics and sportiness with convertible-specific functionality, high quality materials and exceptional workmanship.

In addition to a multitude of BMW ConnectedDrive features, the BMW 2 Series convertible includes an exclusive new addition. It is the first model to offer the new generation Navigation System Professional, which allows navigation data to be updated "over the air" via the embedded SIM card.

The BMW 2 Series convertible will be available on launch with a choice of three engine variants, all members of the latest BMW Efficient Dynamics generation and with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The BMW 220i Convertible 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine has an output of 184 hp and top speed of 231 kph. Meanwhile, the BMW 228i Convertible 2.0 liter four cylinder engine with 245 hp has a top speed of 250 kph. The sportiest and most powerful model variant comes in the shape of the BMW M235i Convertible M Performance featuring a 3.0 liter BMW M Performance TwinPower Turbo straight-six engine. With an output of 326 hp to deliver 0 to 100 kph in just 5.2 seconds and a specially tuned M suspension, it delivers characteristic M dynamism and power.

Driving Impressions
A sure thing is that this car was not designed to be driven on the track, but designed to enjoy outings and activities during sunny weekends.

When driven at a speed below 50 kph, the level of noise is quite low thanks to its dynamic design that works quite well to change the path of the air above the cabin. The engine's performance is superb compared to its low consumption of fuel; it makes it a great daily vehicle. The 2 Series convertible showed stunning stability in cornering with some slight jogging of the body. The response of the steering wheel enables the driver to feel the road with complete control of the vehicle.

BMW Group showed great feat in adding the 2 Series to its fleet. It features an elegant design and good engine performance that is powered by four cylinders. New technologies have been added to qualify it as among the best vehicle in its category.

Overall, I can say that while front seat passengers aren't too affected by its size, those who sit in the rear seat will be a bit affected. If you need more leg room, you can step up to the 4 Series or a bigger convertible from rivals. Pass by your nearest showroom and check the car out!
